The New Zealand government is planning to spend $3.5 billion to build the country’s largest electricity generation project.
The project is expected to generate 2.2 gigawatts of power.
It will be located at the former Kaimakariri site.
Power generated will be used for the New Zealand grid, which is expected in 2020 to be one of the largest in the world.
The site is estimated to produce about 100 megawatts of electricity.
The project’s development and operation will be financed by a federal loan guarantee program and a federal debt repayment program.
Prime Minister John Key has announced the project will be worth $9.4 billion and will create 1,200 jobs.
“We have the largest power generation project in the country, but the reality is, when you’re looking at that scale, the project is very costly,” Mr Key said on Wednesday.
“We’re looking to build this project as a first step towards creating a new generation of high-value, low-carbon jobs.”

Its completion date is 2019.
The Government has set aside $4.8 billion for the project and has secured the support of the Australian Government.
It is hoped the power generation would be able to be sold off over the long-term.
However, a number of issues remain, including how to make a profit from the project.
Critics have questioned the cost of the project, arguing it could become a “slum”.
“The project was built without any consideration for the local community, which has been one of our biggest issues,” Ms Maung said.
Ms Maungal said she hoped the project would lead to more jobs and economic development in the area.””
There are some people in the community who are very critical of the way the project has been constructed.”
Ms Maungal said she hoped the project would lead to more jobs and economic development in the area.
“It’s a massive project for the whole country, and it’s also a massive opportunity for New Zealand to have a large number of new jobs,” she said.
The Federal Government’s Energy Council said it hoped the energy would be sold for a profit.
“I am pleased to see the Government is taking the lead in the drive to build more affordable, reliable and secure power in New Zealand, and to encourage the private sector to play their part,” said FCT chief executive John Lough.
“There is a great deal of interest and investment in the new power generation in the region, which could be used to drive economic growth and boost our energy security.”
New Zealand Power has already spent $1 billion on the project in an effort to increase its market share.
The New Zealand Power project is located at Kaimakaariri, close to Mt Eden, and is expected produce about 2.4 gigawatts.
