Judge rules bail for 3,500 convicted of marijuana possession

The court has granted bail to 3,000 people convicted of possessing marijuana for personal use.

Judge Edward P. Smith granted the release to a group of inmates at the Waupun Correctional Center in Waupaca.

Smith granted the inmates bail in a ruling issued Monday.

The prisoners have been in prison since July.

The order allows the inmates to leave their cell blocks on Monday at 10 a.m. for an unannounced visit to the prison.

The inmates will not be required to stay in the prison for the rest of their lives.

The jail’s security director, Brian St. Germain, said in a statement that the inmates will be able to leave the prison after visiting family and friends.

St. Germaine said the jail will not re-open for the public on Monday.
