The project of creating a wooden box with a wooden lid is an unusual one for someone like Lincoln Project director, James Wahl.
Wahl was the first person to build a wooden frame to house a wooden door.
He was born and raised in Winnipeg, and after graduating from the University of Manitoba in 1978, he worked in the automotive industry in Winnipeg and Vancouver.
In 2008, he left his job to start Lincoln Project.
It’s a group of about 40 young men and women who specialize in woodworking and building projects.
Lincoln Project is one of the only groups in the country that has a large, independent network of volunteers.
Each year, the group works together to provide a safe space for young people in need of help with projects such as making furniture or creating custom furniture.
Logan Rinderman is a small business owner from Calgary, Alberta.
He started Lincoln Project when he needed a small wooden box to store his vintage sewing machine.
He says it was a big help when his business crashed and he was laid off in 2014.
“When I got laid off, I found myself on a quest to find a place to store my sewing machine,” Rindermans website states.
“I saw a project I liked and thought it was just something that needed to be built, and that was the start of Lincoln Project.”
The group of young men, all between the ages of 16 and 30, are now working to create a wooden storage box.
They have been volunteering for the project for the past year and have been using a cardboard box to make their wooden box.
“We really like the idea of putting this box into a place where it will be safe for children and other people to use it,” said Rindeman.
They are hoping that their wooden storage container will become a symbol of the project.
“It’s not a big box, but it’s just something to hold things, so people will see it as a safe place to stash things,” said Wahl about the wooden storage bag.
The group hopes that with the project, they can become a catalyst to promote the importance of safe space.
“There are a lot of people out there that have lost their lives and have lost someone close to them, but we really don’t know who that person was,” said Lincoln Project executive director, Joe Seltzer.
